Up to the Moon
A poem in 2 languages: English | 中文,with the theme of “Moon Festival” 应景中秋节。
I climb the golden strands of light,
Through the endless edge of night.
Above the world, I sit alone,
The mountains beneath in shadows thrown,
Beneath the moon, in slumber laid,
Their whispers lost, their echoes fade.
Dreams blur the far horizon’s line,
The sky is mute, the moon’s fine,
Cold as mist, its pale light cast,
Among the stars that shimmer vast.
Yet here I sit in lonesome sway,
Where does my wandering heart now stray?
The sea azure, the heavens wide,
Call to me with a distant tide.
The stars spin on, the winds still mourn,
A heart adrift, forever torn.
Like sorrow’s voice, the winds pass by,
In quiet sighs, they softly die.
Did moon goddess Chang’e regret the stolen bliss,
Her silent shadow framed in this?
Through time her name in legends stays,
Yet loneliness forever weighs.
A song, a sigh, beneath the sky,
Does the path to home still lie?

Tomorrow marks the 15th day of the 8th month in the Chinese lunisolar calendar, when the night sky is graced by a full moon—hence, the Mid-Autumn Festival, also called the Moon Festival. It’s believed that on this night, the moon shines at its brightest and fullest, coinciding with the autumn harvest.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most cherished holidays in Chinese culture, standing alongside Chinese New Year in its significance. While the full moon symbolizes "family reunion," the festival also touches on themes of "longing" and "unfulfilled reunions," as families and loved ones are often separated and unable to gather at this time of year.
The festival is steeped in the legend of Chang'e, the Moon Goddess in Chinese mythology. After stealing the elixir of immortality, she left her husband behind and ascended to the Moon, accompanied only by her pet, the Moon Rabbit, to live in the eternal solitude of the Cold Moon Palace.
With that, I offer you my little poem to wish you all a "Happy Moon Festival."
