A super short poem inspired by one of the masterpieces in world poetry history.
In 3 languages: Italiano | English | 中文
My awkward imitation of the poem Mattina(Morning) by Italiano poet Giuseppe Ungaretti😓.
Dusk
Alone it guards,
Zen in hues.
Crepuscolo
Sola si protegge,
Zen nelle tinte.

Mattina(Morning), originally titled Cielo e mare (Sky and Sea), it included three additional lines: «M'illumino / d'immenso / con un breve / moto / di sguardo»(«I am illuminated / by immensity / with a brief / motion / of the gaze»). These texts were sent to Giovanni Papini on January 26, 1917, from Santa Maria la Longa (UD). Later, to express the ineffable emotion felt before the dawn over the sea, Ungaretti kept only the first 2 lines and changed the title. It became:
Mattina
M'illumino
d'immenso
Santa Maria la Longa, gennaio 26, 1917
Morning
Am illuminated,
By immensity.
Santa Maria la Longa, January 26, 1917

For me, these two perfect parallel texts turned this poem into one of the finest masterpieces in the history of poetry.
